Chikankari is a traditional embroidery style from Lucknow and is older than 200 years. There are 5000 families involved in Chikankari embroidery in and around villages of Lucknow. Threads are embroidered on shades of light muslin, cotton garments, georgette and thinner material so the needle can pierce the material well. The piece begins with one or more pattern blocks that are used to block-print a pattern on the ground fabric. The embroiderer stitches the pattern, and the finished piece is carefully washed to remove all traces of the printed pattern.
